Airstream-Adventures LED Tail Lights
|
For those of you who don't want to wait for a 4X4 inch
LED tail light/turn signal/brake light to hit the market that
will fit your vintage Airstream,, here is a viable option.
The Blazer item number C793 is available at Tractor
Supply Company for $18.95. The LED body is 4" by 4"
but needs to be modified to fit.
Below are the easy steps to modify and install it on your
vintage Airstream.
Remove the lens from the
body of the assembly.
Lift the LED block out of
the assembly
This model comes with a
4LED light for a side
marker. Remove it.
Clip the wires to the 4 LED
light about half way between
the two lights. If you have a
corner marker on your tail
light assembly, the 4LED light
will be used there.
With a coping saw, cut
the four corners off the
LED block
The top of the LED block
has a wide flange that needs to
be trimmed in half lengthwise.
Trim with a coping saw
being careful not to slice
your thumb. (I did).
Now the LED block will
will sit flush to the tail
light opening on the trailer.
If you need the 4LED
light for the corner light
on the trailer, use the
coping saw to cut off the
flange on the top.
Twist off the triangular
nubs that are left with
needle nose pliers.
Keep the post that is
mounted in the center of
the light. It will be the
mount for the light on the
trailer.
Now extend the wire
connections to the 4LED
light with about 10 inches
of wire. You are now
ready to mount the
assemblies on the trailer.
On my trailer, the
outboard light is the tail
light, the inboard light is
the turn/brake light. The
center light is the backup
light. I decided to have
both the taillight and the
turn/break light have both
functions.
For the corner light, drill the two
rivets that hold the light
assembly to the plastic mount.
Disconnect it and tape off the
end.
Next drill a large hole to pass the
wire connectors through and a
smaller hole for the post on the
4LED light. Pass the wires from
the LED block through from
the inside and attach them to the
4LED light with Twist-on
connectors. Tape the connectors
and pass them through the large
hole to the inside.
Now mount the light using the
pin on the back to the plastic
fixture. Seal all the holes with
Vulkem.
Lastly, connect the wires
of the LED block to the
taillight and turn signal
wires. These are easy to
find and are all connected
with twist-on connectors.
Replace the original covers. Be
careful with the taillight lens.
Tighten the screws slowly taking
care not to crack the lens.
The lights are much brighter than
the old ones and use a fraction of
the electricity.
Now, only three more to go.
These are the tool you will need for
modifying the LED body of the tail
light. Needle nose pliers, coping
saw, twist-on wire connectors,
electricians tape, wire, a screwdriver
and drill (not shown)
